Since 1923

The first tournament was held in 1923 and was known as the Sandilands and Sutton-on-Sea Tennis Tournament. In those days the August Bank Holiday was always on the first Monday in August and families and their house guests from Grimsby, Nottingham and Leicester would meet over that weekend and play tennis against each other.

What began as family tennis parties quickly developed into a tournament with county players taking part. A founder member and organiser of that tournament was the late Mr Coote Green from Grimsby. One of the attractions of Sandilands is its apparent immunity to change, but even Sandilands could not ignore the outbreak of the second world war in 1939 and the tournament that year was the last for almost 20 years.

The tournament was revived by Richard Bellamy and Henry Taylor. The president of the re-established tournament was the late Jack Phillips. The tournament has always been fortunate in being able to rely on the generosity and hospitality of private court owners and local authorities in Sutton and Mablethorpe for the use of their courts.

In addition the Grange and Links Hotel constructed 2 hard courts in 1981 making the tournament secretary's job easier and also led to the establishment of the Spring and August Bank Holiday mixed doubles tournaments. Over the years the tournament committee has been well served by its members who have given freely of their time to ensure that Tennis Week retains an important position in Lincolnshire's sporting and social calendar.

In the autumn of 2018 The Grange and Links Hotel and the Golf Club both closed within a matter of weeks of each other. Undeniably the loss of the former together with its 3 courts was felt by competitors and organisers alike, but Tennis Week still proved very popular and everyone was determined to make the 2019 tournament a success as indeed it was. However, following government guidelines concerning Covid-19 there was no tournament in 2020. Tennis Week became Sandilands Week and many enjoyed the few days even without tennis.

In 2021 a record number of entrants were determined to put the disappointment of the previous year behind them and some excellent tennis was played and enjoyed.

2023 was a huge milestone in the history of Tennis Week, and marked the centenary of the first tournament and the 65th anniversary of the initial post-war tournament.

The occasion was celebrated with a lunch on the Sunday for all previous winners and committee members, and a ball on the Friday night.

To mark 2023 still further, the Tournament's President, Mike Garrs, wrote a book called "Everyone for Tennis" about the history of Tennis Week.

Safeguarding Policy Statement

The Sandilands Tennis Tournament acknowledges the duty of care to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and adults at risk. The Tournament is committed to ensuring safeguarding practice reflects statutory responsibilities, government guidance and complies with best practice and LTA requirements.

The Tournament's safeguarding policy recognises that the welfare and interests of children and adults at risk are paramount in all circumstances. It aims to ensure that regardless of age, ability or disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation, or socio-economic background, all children have a positive and enjoyable experience of tennis at Sandilands in a safe and inclusive environment, and are protected from abuse whilst participating.

As part of our safeguarding policy the Sandilands Tennis Tournament will: promote and prioritise the safety and well-being of children and adults at risk; ensure everyone understands their roles and responsibilities in respect of safeguarding; encourage and maintain a culture where people feel able to raise a genuine safeguarding concern; and ensure robust safeguarding arrangements and procedures are in operation.

The Tournament's policy and procedures are mandatory for everyone involved in the Sandilands Tennis Tournament. Failure to comply may result in dismissal or exclusion from the Tournament.

Whistleblowing: Anyone who does not feel comfortable raising a concern with the Tournament Welfare Officer should contact the LTA Safeguarding Team directly on 020 8487 7000, the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO), or the NSPCC on 0808 800 5000.

Diversity & Inclusion Policy

The Sandilands Tennis Tournament is committed to making tennis diverse and inclusive. As a Tournament we contribute actively to enable more people to play tennis more often, in a manner that is safe, inclusive, and fair β€” regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, sex, race, sexual orientation, religion, socio-economic status or any other background.

This policy sets out our commitment to ensuring that tennis is diverse and inclusive; that diversity and inclusion are embedded in our culture and behaviours; and that we take a proactive approach to ensure that all communities and individuals are valued and able to achieve their full potential.

Reporting a concern: Anyone who has concerns that they or someone else is being discriminated against should speak to our Welfare Officer in confidence: Stuart Kohring β€” 07967 039724. Anti-Bullying Policy

The Sandilands Tennis Tournament strives to ensure that all children (anyone under 18) and adults at risk are safeguarded from abuse and have an enjoyable tennis experience. Bullying is defined as a range of abusive behaviour that is repeated and intended to hurt someone either physically or emotionally.

We recognise that bullying causes real distress and can affect a person's health and development. All children and adults at risk, regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation, have the right to equal protection from all types of harm or abuse. Everyone has a role to play in preventing bullying.

We will seek to keep children and adults at risk safe by: recognising our duty of care towards safeguarding; ensuring that bullying behaviour is not tolerated or condoned; taking action to respond to and deal with any reports of bullying; and making sure our response to incidents takes into account the needs of the person being bullied, the person displaying bullying behaviour, and others who may be affected.

Reporting bullying: Please report incidents to our Welfare Officer, Stuart Kohring. Anyone who experiences or witnesses bullying is encouraged to speak up.
